The government has recently announced that they\u2019ve put the brakes on plans to introduce a 60mph speed limit on many of the country\u2019s motorways, with ministers arguing that the controversial proposals were unacceptable.<\/p>\n
The original plans, which were widely reported by the media and drawn up in an official consultation document at the beginning of 2014, enraged motoring organisations with the suggestion that speed limits should be cut back on specific stretches of British motorways to cut back on pollution.<\/p>\n
Original Highways Agency plans would have seen stretches of the M3 and M1 respectively limited to 60mph between the hours of 7am to 7pm. The proposed move was designed to help Britain reach clean air targets set by the European Union but critics slammed the suggested reduction, arguing it was \u2018the start of a slippery slope\u2019.<\/p>\n
An announcement on 8 July stated that the approach had been rejected by the Government who have tasked the Highways Agency to \u201crigorously investigate alternatives\u201d.<\/p>\n
The Highways Agency is currently looking into new means of reducing pollution in the UK, including suggestions of installing tall barriers on certain stretches of motorway in an attempt to funnel fumes up from ground level. Similar moves have been found to limit noise and<\/i> pollution in countries like Holland.<\/p>\n
