Christmas is fast approaching. Parties and festive goings on are a great temptation so drivers need to be especially careful this time of year and plan ahead. The thought of \u201cI will only have 1 drink and then drive home\u201d will now not be acceptable North of the Border.<\/p>\n
This is because Scotland have decided to reduce the drink-drive limit from December 5th, just before Christmas, and motorists are being advised not to drive if they have drunk any alcohol at all.<\/p>\n
The limit in Scotland will be lowered from 80mg to 50mg in every 100ml of blood, which means a single pint of beer or glass of wine would put a driver over the limit. This brings Scotland in line with most of Europe and Northern Ireland, whereas in England and Wales the limit will remain at 80mg.<\/p>\n
50mg is generally seen as a base line for alcohol in the system. Medication, Mouthwash and a host of other things may contain alcohol and therefore a zero tolerance is generally hard to police. People may not realise they have alcohol in their system without having a drink. 50mg however allows us not to worry about this but is a cause for concern for drinking and then driving, even small amounts.<\/p>\n
It is especially important to remember this when having a good time if you plan on crossing the border: what is legal in England could land you with a hefty punishment in Scotland.<\/p>\n
