The shortlist for European Car of the Year 2016 has been announced, and there’s some serious talent that leaves the field wide open.<\/p>\n

Seven cars have made the shortlist, which was chosen by 58 leading motoring journalists from around Europe. The winners will be announced at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.<\/p>\n

European Car of the Year 2016: The Shortlist<\/h2>\n

Audi A4<\/h2>\n

\"audi<\/p>\n

The fifth generation of Audi’s executive saloon came out in November. On the outside it looks pretty much the same as the last one – but inside there’s much more storage space, upgraded engines, and a comfortable and luxurious upgrade in the cabin.<\/p>\n

BMW 7 Series<\/h2>\n

\"european<\/p>\n

If tech and comfort is your thing, and you’ve got loads of money, the BMW 7 Series exists just for you. This monster can park itself, you can control many functions with simple hand gestures, and it comes with four-wheel steering to make maneuvering nice and easy.<\/p>\n

Jaguar XE<\/h2>\n

\"jaguar<\/p>\n

The British-made XE is cheap to run, looks incredible, and is a fun to drive saloon that’ll be a staple on British roads for years to come.<\/p>\n

Mazda MX-5<\/h2>\n

\"mazda<\/p>\n

On paper the Mazda MX-5 looks like the wildcard of the bunch – a fun-focused sports car among this lot? Don’t forget the similar Toyota GT86 only narrowly missed out on winning a few years ago. It’s an old-school recipe that’s been brought right up to date, stands well against the competition, and shows that fun driving doesn’t need to be expensive.<\/p>\n

Vauxhall Astra<\/h2>\n

This small, sensible hatch is packed with a load of tech, features more cabin and storage space than the previous version, has great handling, and in all honesty – is probably the most worthy car on the list.<\/p>\n

Skoda Superb<\/h2>\n

The Superb is the smart looking rival to the Ford Mondeo or Volkswagen Passat. It offers frugal engines, a massive and well designed cabin, and luxurious ride quality.<\/p>\n

Volvo XC90<\/h2>\n

The new version of the XC90 is a serious premium upgrade from the previous version, and guess what? It’s great – it looks fantastic, it has a wonderful and family friendly interior, and a simple, minimalist style. The range is topped by a twin-engine hybrid that’ll do 113mpg if you can plug it in enough.<\/p>\n
