The shortlist for the 2013 European Car of the Year award has been revealed, with eight vehicles in line to receive the illustrious accolade.<\/p>\n

A total of 32 cars which all hit the market over the next 12 months were in line to receive the award originally.<\/p>\n

However, the fact that the prize was won by alternative propulsion vehicles the Nissan Leaf and the Vauxhall Ampera over the past two years led the judges to take the plug-in hybrids the Volvo V60 and all-new Toyota Prius out of the running.<\/p>\n

All-aluminium-alloy monocoque motors such as the Mercedes-Benz SL and the next-generation Range Rover were also spurned by the judging panel, as well as eye-catching SUVs such as the Citroen C4 Aircross, the Subaru XV and the Mitsubishi Outlander.<\/p>\n

Once all the cutting and tough decisions were agreed, drivers have been left to muse over eight vehicles that comprise of six conventional B- and C-segment hatchbacks, a sporting coupe and a compact MPV.<\/p>\n

The Peugeot 208 is sure to catch the eye with its high-quality interior design and brilliant choice of engines, while the all-new Renault Clio is set to be more stylish, more entertaining and more sporting than its rivals.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz A-class is a perfect balance between premium and non-premium vehicles, though attention has to be paid to the plush and competent Volvo V40.<\/p>\n

The very accessible nature of the Ford B-Max is sure to garner plenty of votes for 2013 European Car of the Year mind, while the Toyota GT86\/Subaru BRZ are speed machines available for much cheaper than drivers would expect.<\/p>\n

Rounding out the shortlist is the distinctive Hyundai i30 and an all-new Volkswagen Golf which has a great opportunity to become the must-have family hatchback of 2013.<\/p>\n

The Golf has long been a popular brand in the Volkswagen family, as is evident by the Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDi 140 GT five-door DSG Diesel Hatchback<\/a>.<\/p>\n
