I wanted something that would get me out of the house, clear my head, and improve my fitness. Since then, I\u2019ve taken on marathons, Tough Mudders, obstacle races, and runs across multiple countries. I\u2019ve always enjoyed keeping things varied and giving myself something to aim for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, while working at UK Carline during Covid, we focused on strengthening the business and increasing our presence locally. Part of that was installing a number of UK Carline signs around Preston \u2014 three on the main entrances into the city and four on a busy roundabout in an industrial estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a local company, that visibility matters. Preston is a key part of who we are, and those entry points are often where people form their first impression of the area \u2014 and of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, those signs became familiar. Visitors would mention seeing them when coming into Preston, and they even started appearing in the background of TV shots alongside the \u201cWelcome to Preston\u201d signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, my running routes regularly took me along the Guild Wheel \u2014 a loop that circles Preston and takes in everything from riverside paths to industrial estates. I\u2019d often pass one or two of the signs, and gradually the idea formed: could I link all seven together in one run?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Setback<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That plan had to wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A combination of injury, Covid, and trying to rush back too quickly set me back significantly. What I thought was a minor issue turned into a long-term problem: a torn hip flexor that took nearly 18 months of physio to properly recover from, followed by another year of rebuilding confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, I got back to full training and signed up for another marathon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Training with Purpose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This time, I added more purpose to my long runs \u2014 turning them into challenges rather than just distances:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lytham to Blackpool along the prom<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mawbray to Maryport, where I\u2019m originally from<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A timed run to my son\u2019s first haircut<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Broughton to Bamber Bridge FC before kick-off<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blackpool to Preston via Lytham<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So when I had a 22km run scheduled, I knew exactly what I was going to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The UK Carline Half Marathon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Run<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My wife dropped me off at Asda in Preston, and I started at the first sign on the roundabout before heading onto the Guild Wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\" style=\"max-width:500px; margin:20px auto;\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ukcarline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Sign-1.jpg\" alt=\"Martin Gate at the first UK Carline sign on the roundabout in Preston\" class=\"wp-image-5723\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ukcarline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Sign-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.ukcarline.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Sign-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sign 1 \u2014 Roundabout start point<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>From there, the route took me along the River Ribble and through quieter sections of the Guild Wheel. It\u2019s a great way to see Preston \u2014 but I was quickly reminded how hilly parts of it are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At around 9km, I reached the Tickled Trout entrance sign. I passed through an area I used to live in, stopped briefly at my old local shop for a drink, and then pushed on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 20km, I hit a final climb that I definitely hadn\u2019t planned for \u2014 one of those hills that feels far steeper when your legs are already gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back at Asda, I still had distance to make up, so I looped back onto the Guild Wheel. One Run.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With those ticked off, the challenge was complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seven signs. One run. Something I\u2019d been thinking about for years, finally done.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I finished in 2 hours 22 minutes, but the time wasn\u2019t the point. For both of us, it\u2019s about seeing that training through and taking on the challenge together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Get Involved<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in or around Preston, keep an eye out for the UK Carline signs \u2014 you\u2019ll probably spot one without even realising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you do, take a photo and send it in.
