Car leasing<\/a>\u00a0customers and other road users should not be forced to endure another winter of bedlam on the UK’s highways and byways, it has been claimed.<\/p>\n

Transport committee chair Louise Ellman has spoken out against the disruption that brought Britain to a standstill during the colder months of 2010\/11.<\/p>\n

Launching a new report into how snow managed to close major airports, interrupt the smooth running of the rail network and leave thousands of motorists stranded, the expert said lessons have to be learned from previous winters.<\/p>\n

“The strategic salt arrangement introduced a year ago clearly kept many main roads open last December,” Ms Ellman explained.<\/p>\n

“The Highways Agency and police forces must however work to manage blockages on the strategic road network more pro-actively, making greater use of roadside and in-car information systems to warn motorists about poor conditions and disruption.”<\/p>\n

She called for the government to re-examine how much it gives to the Met Office and decide whether the overall cost of another winter of chaos could be avoided with the proper forecasting resources.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Institute of Advanced Motorists has stated its intent to help the government develop a new system of post-driver training to help cut crashes on Britain’s roads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
