Van leasing<\/a>\u00a0customers in the UK who are worried about road safety could find comfort in the news that the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is hoping to help the government develop a new post-test driver training scheme.<\/p>\n

The new initiative would replace the current pass plus offering and would be aimed at reducing the number of serious and fatal accidents on Britain’s highways and byways.<\/p>\n

There would be particular emphasis on educating young drivers, with figures from 2009 showing that young people made up more than a quarter (27 per cent) of all driver fatalities.<\/p>\n

With more than 2,000 youngsters injured or killed in just 12 months, IAM chief executive Simon Best said the government is right to focus on new drivers in its ten-year road safety campaign.<\/p>\n

“Having analysed systems of post-test training from other countries, we know that the best examples have reduced young male deaths by almost 30 per cent,” Mr Best explained.<\/p>\n

IAM wants to see training offered to all young motorists in the first year to 18 months of their driving career.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, transport committee chairwoman Louise Ellman has suggested that the UK needs to be more ready to deal with harsh weather this winter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
