Changan vs BYD vs Chery vs Omoda vs Jaecoo: What do they offer?
Chinese car manufacturers are taking over the new car market in the UK with their affordable price tags, long equipment lists and impressive electrified technology.
Car makers such as Changan, BYD, Chery, Omoda and Jaecoo are quickly becoming well-established brands in the UK, and it looks like 2026 shows no signs of these firms slowing down.

Changan

Changan is one of the latest car makers to enter the UK market from China, and currently offers the Deepal S07 electric SUV.
The Deepal S07 is a midsize electric family car that is going up against cars like the Tesla Model Y.
Changan is aiming at the more premium end of the electric SUV market, with the S07 featuring leather upholstery found on the seats, dashboard and door cards.
It comes equipped with an 80kWh battery pack, mated to an electric motor to develop 215bhp and can travel a claimed 295 miles on a single charge.
All cars come with an extensive amount of standard kit such as a 14-speaker audio system, a head-up display and a 17-inch touchscreen display.
BYD

BYD is one of the most established brands from China, after it began selling cars in the UK in 2023.
The firm is about to launch its ninth model in just three years, and currently offers the Dolphin Surf, Dolphin, Seal, Seal U, Seal 6, Sealion 7, Atto 2, Atto 3 and Sealion 5.
BYD standard for ‘Build Your Dreams’ and focuses on offering electric and plug-in hybrid cars from opposite ends of the market.
The Dolphin Surf is one of the cheapest EVs on sale today, and it’s also available with 30kWh and 43.2kWh battery packs.
BYD’s Sealion 7 is a premium electric SUVs that is going up against the likes of the Tesla Model Y, while the Seal is an electric four-door executive saloon aimed at the BMW i4.
BYD also offer several plug-in hybrids for those who are not ready to go fully-electric, with the Seal U DM-i, a direct competitor to the Kia Sportage, and the Seal 6 DM-i, which can be ordered as a four-door saloon and five-door ‘Touring’ estate.
All of BYD’s models utilise the firm’s ‘Ocean Series’ design language, which gives all of its cars a sportier stance, while their curved exterior detailing helps improve aerodynamics, which boosts their efficiency.
Chery

Chery is one of China’s largest car manufacturers, and is one of the latest firms to enter the UK market.
Chery sells the Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 SUVs, which are all offered with plug-in hybrid powertrains, while the smaller Tiggo 7 and 8 can be opted for with more affordable petrol engines.
The Tiggo 7 is a five-seat SUV which is packed with features and plenty of family-friendly technology.
The Tiggo 8, meanwhile, is a seven-seat SUV, and is going up against cars such as the Skoda Kodiaq and Kia Sorento while offering exceptional value for money.
The Tiggo 9 is the flagship model in Chery’s SUV line-up and is available exclusively with plug-in hybrid power.
Omoda

Omoda is a firm that is rising in the UK, and is owned by Chery, as part of the firm’s ‘export strategy’.
Omoda is Chery’s sub-brand, which focuses more towards offering sportier coupe-esque SUVs, with the likes of the 5 and E5, 7 and 9.
The 5 comes equipped with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 147bhp and all models have been designed to offer great affordability with plenty of standard equipment.
The E5 is the electric variant of the 5, boasting a 61kWh battery pack with an electric motor, and can manage a claimed 257 miles between charges.
The 7 is a larger SUV, which rivals cars such as the Kia Sportage. It comes equipped with a standard plug-in hybrid powertrain, bringing good levels of performance and efficiency.
The flagship 9 is Omoda’s take on offering a sporty yet premium SUV, with a plug-in hybrid setup. It can manage up to 93 miles on electric power alone, making it one of the best-in-class for its electric range. The 9 rivals are cars like the BMW X3.
Jaecoo

Jaecoo is another Chinese brand that is rising to fame very quickly in the UK, with its 5 and 7 SUVs.
Jaecoo is also owned by Chery and its ‘export strategy’ programme, though, unlike Omoda, Jaecoo focuses on delivering cars with a more premium look and offers greater practicality.
Jaecoo’s premium image continues onto the design of its cars, with both the 5 and 7 featuring bold front grilles, slim headlight and optional two-tone paint.
The 5 is available with petrol and electric power, and rivals cars such as the Ford Puma and Renault 4. The electric model is equipped with a 61.1kWh unit that can take the car a claimed 248 miles.
The 7 is a midsize SUV, which is offered with petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains and competes against the Nissan Qashqai.
