Seven things you need to know about Nissan’s X-Trail

Jack Evans11th December 2025

Looking for an SUV? Well, there’s one car which aims to bring practicality and performance in equal measure – the Nissan X-Trail.

The X-Trail is the firm’s largest family crossover and has been around since the first-generation car went on sale in 2001.

Fast forward 25 years and the X-Trail is now in its fourth iteration, with the latest car more advanced than ever before, while providing lots of kit as standard and has built up a reputation for being a sturdy and sensible choice among the competition. It’s also a car that we’re proud to offer here at UK Carline

So, if you’re thinking about buying a Nissan X-Trail, what else does it have to offer?

Here are seven things you need to know about the latest version of the Nissan X-Trail.

It’s available with five and seven-seater configurations

In seven-seater form, the X-Trail provides lots of flexibility

If you have a family and are looking to buy an X-Trail, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s available with a choice of five and seven-seat configurations.

The five-seater model provides plenty of rear-seat space, thanks to the car’s tall roofline, providing decent head and legroom, while the boot space stands at up to 585 litres and 1,424 litres with the second row of chairs folded down.

The seven-seater model is much more practical for larger families, with the extra seats more than capable of carrying small children in comfort, while boot space stands at up to 120 litres with all the seats in place and 485 litres with the third row stowed away.

There is an all-wheel drive model

A long wheelbase means lots of interior space

Planning on driving off-road? Then the X-Trail could be the perfect choice as it’s available with an all-wheel drive system.

It’s called ‘e-4orce’ and is available on the ‘N-Trek’ trim level with a hybrid setup.

The system consists of two electric motors at either end of the vehicle and are there to control torque and braking for each wheel individually, prioritising those with the most grip to give the driver the best traction on slippery road surfaces.

It comes equipped with efficient powertrains

E-Power technology helps to deliver excellent efficiency

The X-Trail is available with a choice of mild-hybrid and hybrid powertrains, which both provide impressive economy.

The standard 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is mated to a 48-volt battery, which provides a total power output of 161bhp and 300Nm of torque, while Nissan claims the car can manage a combined 40.9mpg and emits just 129g/km of CO2.

Then there is the hybrid model, which Nissan calls ‘e-Power’, and combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor to develop 156bhp and 250Nm of torque, and can deliver a claimed fuel consumption figure of up to 61.4mpg and emits 117g/km of CO2.

It sits in the midsize SUV class with lots of rivals

When it comes to the competition, the X-Trail is competing in a fiercely competitive market with several options from Europe, Korea and China.

The X-Trail’s main rivals are the Skoda Kodiaq, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. If you fancy something a bit more premium, then there are the Volvo XC60 and BMW X3.

There are five trim levels to choose from

The X-Trail’s interior feels robust and well made

Deciding which X-Trail is best should be straightforward, as there are five trim levels to choose from that provide plenty of standard equipment.

The entry-level Acenta Premium kicks off with front parking sensors, a reversing camera, a wireless phone charger, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display.

The N-Connecta further adds roof rails, rear privacy glass, a powered tailgate, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with ‘NissanConnect’ services, and a 360-degree surround camera.

The Tekna trim boasts 19-inch alloy wheels, an opening glass sunroof, heated front and second row seats, a 10.8-inch head-up display, a digital rear view mirror and tri-zone climate control.

The N-Trek adds a few more rough and ready accessories such as black roof rails, water-resistant seat upholstery, front LED fog lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels and it’s available with Nissan’s ‘e-4orce’ all-wheel drive system.

Flagship Tekna+ cars receive a 10-speaker Bose premium sound system and black quilted leather upholstery.

It’s competitively priced

Price is an important factor to consider when it comes to buying a new car and the X-Trail undercuts the competition here.

It has a very practical interior

There’s plenty of space on offer inside the X-Trail

A family car needs lots of storage space for everyone’s bits and bobs, and thankfully, the X-Trail ticks all of the right boxes in this category.

As an option of N-Connecta and standard on Tekna models, the second row of seats can slide forwards to increase boot space and backwards for more legroom.

Up in the front, the X-Trail provides large door bins, two cup holders in the centre console, a split centre armrest that doubles up with a secret storage compartment and a generous glove box. And, to make life easier for getting in and out of the back, the rear doors open to almost a 90-degree angle.
