Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson is a good-looking, practical and capable family SUV that provides a great driving experience and low running costs.
Under the bonnet, the Tucson can be specified with a choice of petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The PHEV model comes equipped with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an electric motor and a 13.8kWh battery pack, which Hyundai claims can take the car up to 39.2 miles on electric power. Plus, if you opt for the flagship ‘Ultimate’ trim, this setup is available with four-wheel drive, to give the driver added traction for when the roads get slippery.
Nissan X-Trail

The X-Trail has always been a sensible, safe and practical proposition in the family SUV market.
The latest model is available with a choice of five and seven-seat guises, and it comes equipped with a choice of mild-hybrid and hybrid powertrains.
If you go for the e-Power hybrid setup, it also features Nissan’s e-4orce four-wheel drive system and is fitted with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an electric motor that delivers 210bhp and can achieve up to a claimed 54.3mpg.
BYD Sealion 7

If you want to go electric, the Chinese firm BYD has a tempting option with the Sealion 7 SUV.
The Sealion 7 is BYD’s largest model in its vehicle line-up and is available with a choice of two battery packs, while the mid-level Design and flagship Excellence trim come with a dual motor all-wheel drive setup.
All models are well-equipped too, with even the entry-level Comfort model featuring a 15.6-inch rotatable infotainment screen, a panoramic glass sunroof and a 12-speaker Dynaudio premium sound system.
The car’s 82.5kWh battery pack with dual electric motors provides a claimed electric range of up to 373 miles on a single charge, while the top-of-the-line Excellence variant is fitted with a larger 91.3kWh unit that can take the car a claimed 383 miles between top-ups.
Cupra Tavascan

Another worthy electric contender on this list is the Cupra Tavascan, which comes with concept car-like looks and lots of interior space for a family.
It’s also capable of winter driving, too, as ‘VZ1’ and ‘VZ2’ models feature a dual motor all-wheel drive setup which brings added traction when things get slippery.
The Tavascan has a very distinctive appearance, with its sloping roofline, kick-up tailgate and curvaceous body, while the interior feels as though it’s come from the future, with a floating spine-effect design that runs from the centre console into the dashboard.
Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback is a practical, dependable and hard-working family estate.
The latest model features Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive system, ensuring superb stability and traction when the road conditions get slippery.
It also comes with lots of standard equipment, while the 2.5-litre petrol engine is smooth and refined.
The Outback is a great companion on long trips as the car’s thick tyre sidewalls, raised ride height, and soft suspension make it an extremely comfortable choice for buyers.
Dacia Duster

If you want a new car, but don’t want to spend lots of money, then the Dacia Duster could be the perfect solution.
It’s a great choice if you’re planning on doing a lot of driving in winter, as there is the option of a four-wheel drive system, which is available on the 1.2-litre turbocharged mild-hybrid petrol unit that develops 128bhp and 230Nm of torque.
The Duster offers lots of interior space, a practical 517-litre boot capacity, and features lots of handy cubby holes around the cabin. It also features Dacia’s ‘YouClips’, which are little mounting points which can fit onto certain parts of the car’s interior where you can hook things onto them, like a mobile phone holder or cup holders.
