UKC – We review what we sell!
It’s been a while since we’ve done a review on a car. Not for lack of trying, just everything has gone a little mad in the world of late…..more so than usual.

So let’s dive back into our fun new segment called “UKC – We review what we sell!!” (still a working title, suggestions very much welcomed)
The Volkswagen Golf. It’s seen as one of the best hatchbacks to have, and for years had a reputation for being a “boy” racers dream due to it being widely used in rally racing.
But those days are long gone. Now according to Autocar.co.uk, it is the number 1 option for families wanting a hatchback.
At UKCarline we have one manager who is known for driving a Golf, so who better to ask for a review than our very own Keith. Just before Christmas Keith handed back his old VW Golf 7 and took hold of his brand-new Volkswagen Golf 8 GTD DSG.
So what does the head of our Courtesy Car Team think of his new-ish Golf? Will his 36 years of driving experience and passion for the model make you want one?
On average how many cars do you think you’ve driven? This is a tricky one, but I’d say around 20+ and 6 of those have been Golfs, so you could say I’m a fan.

What has been your favourite car to drive? Currently, and I’m not being salesy about this, but this new Golf MK 8 GTD DSG. The design of it alone looks fantastic, and when you see it on the road it looks fantastic. I went for moonstone grey and upgraded the wheels to 19” alloys, just seeing it parked up in the car park it looks great. Take its radiator grille, who doesn’t love the honeycomb effect?
Why this Volkswagen Golf 8 GTD DSG? I’ve been in love with the VW Golf for some time (the fact that this is my 6th is probably a given) so I knew when my old Golf would be going back I’d replace it with a new one, but I wasn’t sure which MK* to get. I read a lot of reviews on the new model and knew this was the right car for me. The intelligent lighting is great as I’m on the motorway nearly every day commuting to work so knowing that the LED headlights and integrated fog lights which come as standard was really handy for me.
What do you like about it? Where to start! The build quality on the MK8 is so much better than the MK7, it’s great handling and an exceptional drive on the long commutes into work, the overall performance of it is impressive.
What do you think could be better? I love cars to be cars, so for me personally, and this isn’t a dig, but I could have less of the technology. I feel cars are becoming more and more controlled by technology and electronics, and yes in some ways that’s good, but it’s also taking the fun out of driving a little bit.
What are your thoughts on Electric Vehicles, and would you get one? I would but not at the moment, I’d find the charging too much of a faff and also having to plan my journey around its range, I’d just rather jump in the vehicle and drive it…this being said the incredible rise in fuel prices right now is making me rethink my options for my next car.
*MK(Mark) 6/7/8 etc. is when manufacturers redesign the model to keep it fresh and current. MK8 is currently the only model available for factory ordering.
