Volkswagen Tayron: Everything you need to know
Volkswagen’s new Tayron SUV is one of the best-in-class when it comes to practicality, efficiency and running costs.
It’s available with a choice of five and seven seats, as well as there are lots of different engine permutations.
So, if you’re in the market for one of these great all-round family workhorses, what else do you need to know?
We’ve compiled a list of the most important things you need to know about the Volkswagen Tayron.
What engines are available?

The Tayron is available with a plethora of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains to suit a wide range of buyers.
The first is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology badged ‘eTSi’ and produces a total of 148bhp and can return a claimed 46.5mpg.
Higher-specced trim levels will come with the option of a punchier 2.0-litre turbocharged unit, which benefits from Volkswagen’s 4Motion four-wheel drive system. Also, there is a choice of two different power outputs of 201bhp and 268bhp.
There is also one diesel powertrain available, which is a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that produces 148bhp and can return a claimed 49.3mpg.
However, if you need even lower running costs, then there’s the option of two different plug-in hybrid variants, which are badged ‘eHybrid’.
Both are fitted with a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to an electric motor and 19.7kWh battery. But, there is the option of 201bhp and 268bhp power outputs, with both models returning a claimed electric driving range of up to 71 miles.
How many trim levels are there?

Volkswagen offers the Tayron with plenty of different trim levels, and all models are very well equipped.
The entry-level ‘Life’ starts at £40,130 and includes a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights. Next up is the ‘Match’, which is priced from £45,315 and adds a tilt and sliding glass panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and silver roof rails. The ‘Elegance’ comes in at £42,700 and boasts 19-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats and interior ambient lighting. Move up to the £43,105 ‘R-Line’ and it features 20-inch alloy wheels, sports seats and bespoke R-Line exterior and interior styling. Meanwhile, the flagship ‘R-Line’ Edition is priced at £47,490 and adds a powered tailgate and electric memory front seats.
What’s it like to drive?

Behind the wheel, the Tayron doesn’t offers the kind of easy-going driving style which makes it ideal for everyday adventures.
The power from the plug-in hybrid and petrol engines is more than enough on a day-to-day basis, while the ride is smooth and composed over bumps and the steering is nicely weighted.
Visibility all-round is excellent, and the car’s refinement levels are impressive, with very little intrusion of wind, tyre and road noise entering the cabin.
The only negatives to report are the car’s numb steering feel and large proportions make it feel rather big and cumbersome out on a twisty road, with other key rivals feeling more dynamic to drive.
Who is its target audience?

As it’s a large SUV, the main target audience will be growing families who need a vehicle that is dependable, durable and will be able to carry lots of people in decent comfort.
Large SUVs are some of the most desirable cars on sale right now. They have become a favourable choice over family saloons and estates, with the Tayron managing to tick all the right boxes for it to be a very worthy choice for families.
Why choose a Tayron over its rivals?
The Tayron has plenty of strong values over the competition. It’s comfortable to travel in, is easy to drive, and there is lots of interior space.
Plus, with a huge variety of engine options, which all provide decent fuel consumption, low CO2 emissions and are more than powerful enough in the real world, the Tayron should be very high up on your shopping list if you’re looking for a sensible and practical family SUV.
