What’s the difference between Jaecoo’s 5 and 7?
Jaecoo is a brand on the up. In fact, in October, the Jaecoo 7 outsold the famous Nissan Qashqai, as well as cars like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Vauxhall Corsa, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Jaecoo has recently introduced the new 5 as a way of expanding its range, while making sure that buyers after something a little more compact have an option. But how else do the 5 and 7 differ? Let’s take a look.
Size

Size is one of the key areas where the Jaecoo 5 and 7 differ. Looking at the more compact of the two first, the 5 comes in at just over 4.3 metres long, whereas the 7 is slightly longer at 4.5 metres. The smaller car measures 1.86 metres wide, too, while the 7 measures 1.856 metres wide – so it’s only slightly wider.
There’s a bit of a difference when it comes to boot space, too. Opt for the Jaecoo 7 and you’ll get either 412 litres of boot space in the plug-in hybrid, or 500 litres for the standard petrol car. At 480 litres, the boot space that you get from the smaller 5 is impressive, too, and only just shy of the one on the larger petrol-powered 7 model.
Powertrains

Look to the Jaecoo 5, and you’ve got the option of either petrol or electric power. The former brings just shy of 140bhp and comes equipped with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The electric E5, meanwhile, has a single electric motor which delivers just over 200bhp and a range of up to 248 miles from a single charge. A maximum charge speed of 80kW means that you should be able to conduct a 30 to 80 per cent charge in around 27 minutes.
The Jaecoo 7, meanwhile, is available in either regular petrol or plug-in hybrid forms. The standard petrol car uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged unit which is linked to an automatic gearbox as standard. It’s also available with either front- or all-wheel-drive, so there’s a version for drivers who need additional traction. Then you’ve got the plug-in hybrid model, which combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and battery. With a full battery, you should get up to 56 miles of range, giving it one of the better electric-only ranges of any PHEV on sale today.
Equipment

Jaecoo cars have become well-known for their generous standard equipment levels and when you look closer, there really is a lot of kit included as standard. The Jaecoo 7 is available in two specifications – Deluxe and Luxury – with entry-level Deluxe bringing 19-inch alloy wheels, a full-length panoramic sunroof and heated front seats, as well as a huge 13.2-inch infotainment system and 10.25-inch instrument cluster. There’s a rapid wireless smartphone charging pad, too, which is cooled for even more efficient operation. Switch to Deluxe and you’ll get a greater range of safety assistance equipment, as well as a 540-degree parking camera, keyless entry and a powered tailgate. There’s a slightly larger 14.2-inch infotainment screen, too.
But how do things compare in the 5? Well, opt for the standard petrol car and you’ve got the option of Pure or Luxury specifications. The former brings 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights, while inside there’s a 13.2-inch infotainment system and an 8.8-inch instrument cluster ahead of the driver. Both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard, too. Luxury, meanwhile, adds a heated steering wheel, a premium Sony eight-speaker sound system and two-zone air conditioning. The electric model gets much the same specification as Luxury-spec petrol cars, though you also get a handy ‘pet-friendly mode’ which will keep the cabin to a safe temperature for animals while displaying a notice on the main infotainment to inform passers-by that the cabin is being kept cool on warmer days.
