From performance badge to one of 2026’s most exciting brands.
CUPRA has evolved far beyond its beginnings as the sporty side of SEAT, building a distinctive range of performance-focused, electrified and unmistakably styled cars.
This Spanish brand is far from simply being a sub-section of SEAT, and we’ve got all of the key details that you need to know about it.
CUPRA may have started out life as the sporty sub-brand underneath the wider SEAT umbrella, but today it’s a fully-fledged manufacturer with one of the most exciting ranges of cars about.

But where did this Spanish brand start life, what were its key turning points and what cars does it now offer? Let’s take a look.
When did CUPRA start?
The first time that we saw that CUPRA badge appear was back in the late 1990s, sitting on the SEAT Ibiza GTI Cupra Sport. Quickly after, more CUPRA-badged models appeared, usually denoting a go-faster version of a standard SEAT model.
Famous CUPRA-badged cars continued to appear – with highlights including the CUPRA Leon – and this helped to establish it as a performance-oriented section of SEAT.
A brand in its own right
But all that would change in 2018, as CUPRA stepped away from SEAT to become a brand in its own right. No longer would CUPRA simply be a go-faster version of a SEAT, but a producer of its own cars with a distinctive design and sportier feel.
Things kicked off in 2018 with the CUPRA Ateca, a performance SUV which showcased the brand’s unique sense of style. It was also available with a punchy 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine – also found in the Volkswagen Golf R – which gave the Ateca hot-hatch levels of performance.

The Ateca helped introduce a new visual identity and a clearer idea of what an independent CUPRA could become.
The Formentor’s arrival
CUPRA would continue to utilise its close ties with SEAT after its launch, with further production of the Ateca and a new Leon model, too. But in 2020, CUPRA would create its first in-house car – the Formentor.

The Formentor would be a wilder, more innovative car than we’d seen from CUPRA beforehand. With outlandish styling, it got people talking, but inside there was still plenty of space and a well-sized boot made it a great family choice.
The great news is that the Formentor remains on sale, and you’ll find it available here at UK Carline. It’s available with a great range of engines, too, including an efficient e-HYBRID model.

Ateca
Just as it was when the CUPRA brand launched in 2018, the Ateca is a popular and practical option. With its upright driving position, it offers loads of confidence-inspiring visibility, yet with great handling and well-sorted suspension, it feels pretty sporty to drive.

Born
The Born was the car which kickstarted CUPRA’s electric revolution. Based on the same clever platform as cars like the Volkswagen ID.3 and Skoda Enyaq, the Born brings a range of up to 389 miles in big-battery form.
Inside, the Born gets a large central infotainment screen and a secondary digital driver’s display for a high-tech feel.
Leon
Where would CUPRA be without the famous Leon? Just as always, the Leon remains a core CUPRA model, and you’ll find it here at UK Carline available in both hatchback and estate layouts.
The latter is particularly roomy, too, with a large boot that makes this one of the most practical cars in the CUPRA range. Sturdy engine choices and excellent interior build quality help to make the Leon a great choice today.
Tavascan
Furthering CUPRA’s electric ambitions is the Tavascan. It’s a great option for drivers who are keen on a Born, but need just a little extra space. It’s got a range of up to 353 miles, too, making this an electric car that’ll be great for longer journeys.
Inside, the Tavascan gets a properly futuristic interior, with a large central column looking a little spaceship-like when you see it in the metal.
Terramar
Finally, we have the Terramar. It’s a slightly more compact SUV compared with the Ateca, but it gets CUPRA’s typically wild styling to help make things even more exciting.
Available with a great line-up of engines, the Terramar can be equipped with petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid setups. There’s also the option of a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine for drivers after even more performance.
