Ford celebrates 20 years of Mondeo

Ford has helped pioneer many elements of car manufacturing which are now standard parts of several of the vehicles which we offer on car leasing contracts. Far from being a flash in the pan, the brand has also proven that it has the power of longevity, which is particularly difficult in today’s economic climate.

The Ford Mondeo has been one of the models which has acted as a driving force for the company. It has even integrated itself into pop culture with James Bond taking the model for a spin in the 2006 release Casino Royale.

It has also helped innovate a number of technologies in car manufacturing, many of which have now become the basis of safety standards for modern vehicles, such as air bags, traction control, intelligent protection, Adaptive Cruise Control and EcoBoost engines.

Mondeo made these advanced features available and affordable for all customers in the UK. Its first generation gave the driver an airbag, an optional passenger airbag and offered traction control, adaptive damping, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and power steering, all as standard.

These successes have seen the Ford Mondeo be a undeniable success across many markets, selling more than 4.5 million across Europe and 1,400,000 in the UK.

Barb Samardzich, vice president Product Development, Ford of Europe, said that the vehicle has “a rich history and a bright future”.

“Across two decades, Mondeo has stood for great driving dynamics, surprising technologies, excellent safety and outstanding fuel efficiency.”

First released in 1993, the Mondeo was the product of a five-year programme which cost the manufacturer more than £3 billion. However, the investment paid off, as in 1994 it was named Car of the Year and has continued to gain accolades across Europe and has, arguably, been the car to beat for many of its rivals.

Two years later, in 1996, consumers saw a revised and lighter Mondeo which came with optional side airbags, which would soon become the standard along with four-channel ABS.

“Mondeo’s future is very bright and at Ford Motor Company we’re looking forward to delivering another 20 years of innovation for drivers across Europe,” added Mr Samardzich.

To mark two decades since the first Mondeo model was released, Ford has produced a video to celebrate 20 years in the industry with a voiceover done by critically-acclaimed actor Ray Winstone.
