This New Braking System Works Almost Too Well…

Autoliv’s New Emergency Brake Would be at Home in a Theme Park

Self driving and smart cars have reached the point where danger is detected and reacted to faster than a driver ever could. To help a vehicle actually stop in time at speed, manufacturers Autoliv have designed and built an emergency brake that uses extreme suction to grab onto the road.

Underneath the chassis, there is a large metal plate that can shoot to the road in a fraction of a second and establishes a vacuum that exerts 15,000 Newtons of force – said to reduce braking distance by as much as 40%.

However, this vacuum brake works almost too well – if you’re going fast enough (over 44mph) the G-force has the potential to turn your internal organs to mush if you’re wearing a seatbelt, and if you’re silly enough to not wear one you’ll find yourself on the wrong side of the windscreen. As such, Autoliv expect the brake would only operate at speeds below 40mph.
