Ford increases market share

Ford has announced that it continues to be the most popular manufacturer for British motorists.

Using official sales figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the manufacturer reported its car range accounted for 15.6 per cent of sales in the January market, an increase of 0.3 percentage points compared with January 2011, while Ford commercial vehicles maintained overall leadership of the business market.

The Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus remain the most common cars on Britain’s roads.

Mark Ovenden, the managing director of the firm’s UK operations, said: “Ford’s car range is proving its strong customer appeal, starting the year with a sales performance that extends our lead in total car sales including sales to private customers, an indicator that the quality of our market share also continues to be enhanced.”

According to the SMMT’s figures, much of the motoring sector remained flat in January, with only 128,853 units sold – a marginal rise of 0.03 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2011.

Motorists who find that they need a new car, but cannot afford to purchase one at the minute, as the wider economic conditions bite, may want to consider hiring a vehicle.

Car leasing will not only cut down on many of the bureaucratic processes associated with driving, but it could allow cash-strapped consumers to avoid forking out large sums of money to privately buy a new car.

Mr Ovenden pointed out the appeal of the new Focus model and said it was indicative of the company’s approach.

He stated that the new 125PS EcoBoost engine was an example of the exciting new technology that the manufacturer was producing to accommodate drivers’ increasingly sophisticated needs.

Another example of this innovation is the all–new Ford B-MAX. The smart, fuel-efficient city car was recently unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.
