Range Rover Sport breaks record

Picking a new car can be a very difficult choice, however, car leasing can make the decision much easier, simpler and more cost-effective. One of the most important factors when choosing a car, whether it is on a car leasing contract or not, is how reliable the vehicle will be.

As the weather turns colder, this is likely to be a top priority for anyone considering changing their model now.

However, the new Range Rover Sport has proven that it can survive in even the toughest environment. It has just set the fastest recorded time for a land vehicle crossing of the ‘Empty Quarter’.

The ‘Empty Quarter’ is one of the harshest and challenging environments on earth as it is the largest sand desert in the world and the second biggest desert after the Sahara. Temperatures regularly exceed 50°C, while it is one of the most barren and arid areas in the world.

As if this wasn’t dangerous enough, there are no reliable water sources and the terrain is constantly shifting. However, it proved a fair challenge for the brand new Range Rover Sport.

It completed the crossing from Wadi Adda Wasir in Saudi Arabia to the border of the United Arab Emirates in a record-breaking ten hours and 22 minutes. The model averaged a speed of 51.87 mph (81.87 km/h) across its 849km journey.

Behind the wheel of the standard Range Rover Sport was 47-year-old Spaniard and professional Land Rover driver Moi Torrallardona. He has competed in the prestigious Dakar Rally for ten consecutive years, so had plenty of experience to bring to the challenge.

The Spanish driver was driving a standard production version of the Range Rover Sport with a 510PS 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine and running standard tyres. Only one modification was made to the vehicle, a underbody protection plate was fitted to the model.

Mr Torrallardona described the desert as a “brutal, unforgiving and sometimes deadly environment” that requires”a unique combination of speed, finesse and technical skill”.

He added that it is crucial to tackle the dunes with precision and that this “unique way of driving requires a vehicle which has the same skillset”.
