Aren’t Tesla the gift that just keeps on giving? Their new Model X SUV is an innovative, clean driving delight; and their Model S has an Insane Mode (standing to 60 in 3 seconds) that has to be seen to be believed. Now, both the Model X and the Model S have gotten an Autopilot function as part of an over-the-air software upgrade.
The latest upgrade, Version 7.0, enables the car to steer itself within a motorway lane and regulate its own speed according to surrounding traffic. How? Four feedback sources: a forward facing camera, front mounted radar kit, 12 ultrasonic sensors (able to sense up to 16 feet around the car in all directions), and GPS data.
“Tesla Autopilot relieved drivers of the most tedious and potentially dangerous aspects of road travel. We’re building Autopilot to give you more confidence behind the wheel, increase your safety on the road, and make highway driving more enjoyable. While truly driverless cars are still a few years away, Tesla Autopilot unctions like the systems that airplane pilots use when conditions are clear. The driver is still responsible for, and ultimately in control of, the car.”
You can’t fall asleep on the motorway just yet: Tesla recommend the driver keeps their hands on the wheel and remains fully alert. However, they are continuing to work on fully autonomous technology.
