Contract car hire customers could find they are safer behind the wheel if they opt for a model that is fitted with a reversing camera system and rearview mirror-mounted display.
According to research conducted by engineering firm Exponent, installing camera systems to cars will cut down on the number of accidents caused when reversing, with the rearview mirror the optimum location for an LCD display.
Placing the screen in the location rather than in the car’s centre console means the driver does not have to divert their attention away from the mirror in order to check the camera display.
Douglas Young of Exponent said the company’s research also revealed other advantages.
“By placing the rear camera display in the mirror, you can increase display usage, improve driver scan patterns, enhance productive gaze durations and minimise reaction times,” he said.
Parking sensors can also help drivers become more aware of their surroundings when reversing and this feature is standard on many saloon cars with high trim levels, such as the Honda Accord EX.
Earlier this year, Honda came top of the Reliability Survey 2011 from What Car? magazine.
