Driven: Mitsubishi L200 Warrior Review

It’s not often we get a commercial vehicle to test drive, but since so many people are driving pick-ups we couldn’t resist. So here is our Mistubishi L200 Warrior review.

At over 17 feet, this is a long vehicle. It can comfortably seat five and has a six foot load bay behind the cab. The load bay can be left open, or Mitsubishi will supply a number of different types of load covers. As well as practicality for those carrying a lot or who need 4WD, the lower company car tax for this type of vehicle is why many drivers choose a pick-up.

Our L200 has a 2.4 litre diesel engine producing 151hp and a six speed transmission (automatic is also available). Obviously not designed to perform like a Golf, it has respectable performance with a torquey engine at low revs, and settles into a steady cruise on the motorway. Since it’s more designed to cope with rough terrain: its ride height, long suspension and all-terrain tyres compromise the handling and comfort on the road compared to a car. However, if you ever need to travel off-road, then the L200 will take you where other vehicles can’t. With two and four wheel drive, high and low range gears and a diff-lock as standard, the L200 really can handle anything.

The Warrior comes with alloy wheels, leather seats, sat-nav, Bluetooth and air-conditioning as standard plus much more. It’s not the highest spec in the L200 range, but by no means is it stingy with tech. Some of the trim is a little shiny and plasticky, but this is a vehicle that loves being driven in mud, and will need a bit of a wipe down afterwards. There’s plenty of cabin space, although if you regularly have people in the back, you might want to get a load-bed cover for security and protection.

On a mix of driving, our L200 returned an average of 37mpg, which is impressive for something so big.

You said company car tax was lower…?

Yes. In the UK, benefit-in-kind tax for company car drivers is calculated using a combination of the vehicle’s list price and carbon emissions. The more expensive and/or more polluting the car, the more company car tax you pay. However, a company car driver will be taxed on a lower (sometimes), flat rate if they drive a commercial vehicle, such as a pick-up. So is there much sacrifice in comfort when driving one in order to reduce your tax bill?

The L200 doesn’t offer the comfort of a car, but if you need a load-lugging workhorse, 4WD capability, like towing things, or just want something different then it’s worth a look.
