Van leasing customers may like to know that the Renault Kangoo Van Z.E. has picked up a top industry award.

The model won the International Van of the Year 2012 title on the eve of the14th the 14th International Trailer Show, beating other highly recommended vehicles such as the Volkswagen Caddy, Fiat Ducato and Iveco Daily. The awards were adjudicated by 22 European journalists who are experts in the light commercial vehicle sector.

Chairman of the panel Pieter Wieman stated that the Kangoo Van Z.E. could help make the idea of an electric commercial vehicle go mainstream.

He said he believes that environmental sustainability is one of the most important issues in the transportation industry at the moment.

The judges gave the van a score of 104 points from a maximum of 168 and praised its ability to deliver competitive performance and practicality, while producing zero-emissions.

Jean-Marie Hurtiger, director of Renault’s light commercial vehicle division, said: “This prize rewards the work of the people at Renault who have worked for several years on the Kangoo Van Z.E., one of Renault’s four electric vehicles to be launched in the next ten months.”

He added: “All of the company’s functions were involved in the adventure, including the design office, the Maubeuge plant and sales.”

In designing the van, Renault was aware that usually the addition of an electric battery compromises the storage capacity on offer to businesses and individuals who rely on them for work. To remedy the issue the company fitted the Kangoo Van Z.E.’s battery under the floor of the model.

Van leasing customers who may not want to use an electric vehicle could choose a petrol model from the same range, which is fitted with an internal combustion engine, or the two or five-seater Maxis model.

Alternatively, individuals or businesses may be interested in leasing the Volkswagen Caddy, which came close to winning the prize. The VW van has BlueMotion technology fitted on it to ensure that it is one of the most fuel-efficient vans currently available.
