Like many great ideas, the first Mini was born out of necessity. The late 1950s saw Britain in the grip of a fuel shortage, prompting a need for more economical cars. The Mini was the answer: compact and lightweight, it also introduced a revolutionary transverse four-cylinder front-wheel drive design that maximised interior space.
The Mini was originally produced by the British Motor Corporation, which became British Leyland in the 1960s and Rover Group in the 1980s. In 1994, BMW acquired Rover and the rights to the Mini brand, and since 2000 has been producing the restyled Mini Hatch range from its Oxfordshire plant.
The closest modern equivalent to the Classic Mini of 1960s fame, the Mini Hatchback series is now in its third generation and, judging by glowing reviews from the auto press, it's never been better. Spacious and economical yet speedy and sporty, it clinched Auto Express's Best Premium Small Car of the Year 2016.
If it's a practical family car you're looking for, the Mini Countryman does the job admirably.
